Step back into the Middle Ages
Village centre location. Two reserved parking spaces. Sleeps six, two en-suite bathrooms. Wood burner, patio and sun deck.
In the heart of the medieval village of Dunster is The Oval, our oldest cottage. Dating back to the 14th century, this cosy self-catering holiday home has original cruck beams, oak screening, a stunning four-poster bed, wood-burning stove, stone floors and many more fascinating features. It has also caught the attention of Channel 4’s Time Team, which has dendro-dated the cruck beams in the main bedroom to the winter of 1366.
The Oval is constructed of timbers some of which are more than 600 years old. Its name is nothing to do with cricket – it’s a corruption of the word ‘hovel’, used for any house in past times. It’s thrilling to explore and find marks on the wood panelling that were made by the carpenters so long ago, or sleep in the stately four-poster, just like Henry VIII.
We haven’t forgotten that this is a self-catering holiday home in the 21st century, though. You will therefore find a fully-equipped modern kitchen, utility room, playroom for the children, a little courtyard for summer breakfasts or drinks before dinner and a decked area. There is a 50" smart TV with Netflix and DVD player, plus BT Infinity Wi-Fi.
The garden has wonderful views of Exmoor and from there, high above the village, you’ll catch the enchanting sound of the church bells.
As with all our cottages, The Oval is suitable for families with children, couples and adult-only groups. Dogs are welcome on request. Linen and central heating are included in the rental. There are two reserved parking spaces. Please contact us for more details.
